I am a Linux developer who today had my first customer email me a.snag file. Suffice it to say, it is useless to me.The 'do no evil' approach would be for TechSmith to offer a viewer (either universal or through an online converter) to encourage wider acceptance of the format. However, that seems to not be what TechSmith is going for.I thought I was on to something when I found a Google Chrome add-on, but noooo sir-eee Bob, the very same add-on designed to create.snag files does not enable viewing them. Go figure.Even TechSmith's own forum software only accepts.jpg,.gif, or.png images. Are you kidding me? Come on!Please stop being evil.
(not speaking 'officially' for the company here, but.)We do NOT expect customers to share.snag/.snagproj files directly. We do not hold forth.snag/.snagproj files as formats for universal interchange. In fact, Snagit's primary workflows are specifically designed to make it VERY easy for customers to share in universally accepted formats (.jpg/.png, etc) - and that is how we intend for it to be used.
Just because your customer used Snagit in a way we did not intend, does not make us, or the.snag/.snagproj file format evil.:). However, having shared a.SNAG file it should be no problem to open this propietary file in Snagit. Couldn't you do that Nelson? You misunderstand the SNAG file, it's used to maintain any modifications the user made viable rather than having them flattened as would happen in a normal image format.
It's primary purpose is for the user to go back and change any modifications they made. There's nothing evil in this purpose at all. It's not for sharing but for the user to modify their captures. If you want to view a SNAG file you'll need Snagit. There's not another viewer available and your customer should have known that.
Only problem with that thought process is that the SnagIt format is proprietary, which only Snagit can open, but; only The PC Version. The Mac version which is closer to the Linux version is Also Proprietary as well, and can not be even be shared with the PC Version. If the Snag File was intended to be shared what's the benefit for using two different proprietary versions. I say scrap both and make Tiff the main system, It can hold all those fancy layers and other stuff that the SNAG file can do and its been around ages.Although PNG is the best Graphic file format to send in email and is a loss-less format and a thousand times better than JPEG if you want layers Tiff is the route to go. The Object of Company is to Make money.
To make Money you sell to all customers not just some customers. The way to do that is make the product as accessible as possible to all Customers. IF a person has Windows machine, a Mac, and Linux; they all should able to open that file, and it show up on any machine layers and all.
